Feliway MultiCat Diffuser: does it actually stop cats from fighting?

Feliway makes three different diffusers, and it’s easy to grab the wrong one. Classic and Optimum both release a facial pheromone aimed at an individual cat’s stress. MultiCat is different: it releases a synthetic version of the cat-appeasing pheromone, the one a mother cat produces that helps kittens (and, the theory goes, unfamiliar cats) tolerate each other. It’s built specifically for tension between cats, not stress in general.

Where this actually applies

If you’re dealing with one cat that seems anxious about noise, a move, or a new piece of furniture, Optimum is the better fit. MultiCat is for when the specific problem is two or more cats in the same house who are hissing, blocking each other from rooms, or staking out territory, the kind of thing covered in why cats that got along for years suddenly start fighting.

What it won’t do on its own

A diffuser changes the ambient signal in a room. It doesn’t create more litter boxes, food stations, or vertical space, and those are usually the actual source of the conflict. If two cats are fighting over one litter box or one favorite window perch, the standard advice still applies: one box per cat plus one spare, separate food stations, and enough vertical space (like the trees in our multi-cat tree roundup) that nobody has to walk past a rival to reach a resource. MultiCat is meant to run alongside those fixes, not substitute for them.

Setup and timeline

Same rules as Feliway’s other diffusers: plug it into a room the cats actually spend time in, not a hallway, and keep it clear of curtains or furniture that blocks airflow. One unit covers about 700 square feet, and a single refill lasts roughly four weeks. Give it the full stretch before deciding whether it’s helping. Reviews on this one run more mixed than Feliway Optimum’s, which tracks: pheromone response varies more between individual cats than the marketing suggests, and it’s doing a harder job (changing how two animals feel about each other) than a single-cat calming diffuser.
